Guest Tablet Theft Protection: GPS Geofence, Kiosk Mode and Device Management
The question comes up in every conversation, usually second: "And what happens if the tablet disappears?" The honest answer isn't that it never does — it's that the difference between a lost device and a recovered one is decided in the first few minutes after it leaves the property.
GPS geofence: one perimeter per chalet
A GPS boundary with its own centre and radius is drawn around each chalet. The device checks its position continuously and tightens the interval the moment something moves. The boundary is set per property — a detached chalet with a car park needs a different radius than an apartment inside a complex.
Instant lockdown, even with no connection
The lock is triggered locally on the device, not requested from a server — so it works even when the tablet is in a bag with no signal. A lost-device screen appears instead of your content. Factory reset, safe boot, airplane mode, Wi-Fi settings and USB file transfer are all sealed in that state, and the state survives a reboot.
Kiosk mode: why the device is locked inside the house too
Theft protection doesn't begin at the property line — it begins in normal operation. The tablet runs permanently in a managed kiosk mode as Device Owner: only ChaletMoments and the approved streaming apps are reachable, the home button returns to the app, and the device cannot be reset or repurposed. A tablet without that mode is a tablet with resale value.
Location trail and recovery
You receive an email with the location and a live map, and the device keeps reporting where it is — minute by minute, until it's back. If it loses connectivity along the way, positions are buffered locally and delivered once signal returns. Unlocking happens remotely, or on-site with a code.
What is tracked — and what explicitly is not
Only the device's location is recorded. No guest names, no phone numbers, no personal data. A tablet sitting in the chalet reports no movement profile of its guests; location exists for the case where the device leaves the property, and for no other.
Fleet management: condition, battery and availability at a glance
Alongside theft protection, every device reports its condition to the admin: reachability, battery, charging state, software version. A tablet that has gone quiet for hours is surfaced as a fault before a guest notices it — and software updates roll out remotely, without anyone driving to the house.

What happens if a guest takes the tablet out of the chalet?
The moment it crosses the GPS boundary the device locks itself on the spot — even with no connection — and shows a lost-device screen instead of your content. Does the theft protection work offline?
Yes. The lock is triggered locally on the device and does not depend on a server requesting it. Location points gathered without a connection are buffered and delivered once connectivity returns, and a reboot does not clear the state.
Does the geofence track guests as well?
No. Only the tablet's position is recorded. No guest names, phone numbers or other personal data are associated with the location — tracking applies to the device and exists for the case where it leaves the property.
Can a locked tablet be factory-reset and resold?
Not easily. The device runs as an Android Device Owner: factory reset from settings, safe boot and the system settings are blocked while the lost state is active. That is not a guarantee against every attack, but it removes the simple path to resale value.
